RCA

RCA was a long lived fixture in the Australian music industry, but the first sign of an Australian artist being locally recorded and released was in 1963, the year CBS set up up Australia. RCA for the most part released it’s U.S.A. catalogue, but once they got going had significant success with local acts such as Max Merritt and the Meteors and in the 1970s Renee Geyer.

For all their local releases, and their association with the Readers Digest boxed sets, specific pop RCA compilations were not that common. However, their singles appear on dozens of Majestic, K-Tel and other label releases. They did however release dozens of Country and Western compilations

Supercharged Hits is easy to find – I have three copies – it can be found for as little as $2 – and has a great collection of music. Yet this price probably reflects the fact that this is the worst sounding compilation in my collection – hence three copies to try and find a good pressing. Some of the tracks sound like they were sourced from an AM radio, cassette recording. It’s pressed in the typically thin and poor quality RCA vinyl. Many of the tracks are heavily truncated too. However, if you are into Australian artist recordings, it does have Max Merritt and the Meteors Western Union Man. The 20 Supercharged Hits title was later used for a 1970s New Zealand release DW5001.
